If you find yourself suddenly unemployed, you need to take action right away. Some of the first things you need to do are apply for unemployment with WorkSource and apply for food stamps through DSHS. You may also want to contact the various community resources to talk about rental assistance and utility assistance. These agencies include OlyCAP and Serenity House. Also check out the area food banks. Talk to any of the above agencies about getting a list of community resources and how to use them.

Food banks are in places of need throughout Jefferson and Clallam counties. They are a necessary fixture in each community. It's hard to predict when or if you or your family will ever need the services of a food bank. If you become unemployed, you will find that using the resources located in an area can help you and your family survive hard times until you can become employed again. When I went back to school, I became familiar with food banks and food pantries in the area. Talk to your nearest social services rep in your area to find food banks in your area. They can really help.

These two counties on the north coast of Washington have relatively high unemployment rates compared to neighboring counties such as Kitsap, Pierce, King and Snohomish counties. It is very tempting to just get up and move to these locations since commuting may be just too far to go and back five days a week. Here is a list of things to consider when making a move to that job in a different locale.

1) Cost to move (moving van, rent, deposits, moving helpers, gas, etc)
2) Brand new (where are the schools, shopping areas, no friends or relatives)
3) New area characteristics (crime, neighborhood atmosphere, weather)

Making a move for a job may be a good career move, but it will result in you starting over again. Military members and dependents live this life. So do some people whose jobs involve a lot of displacement. Others prefer to stay in one area, even though this might hurt them financially. They prefer setting down roots, no matter the cost. Make your choice wisely.

Some jobs give a clear closing date. Even still, they sometimes extend this closing date if their applicant pool did not give them an adequate amount of personnel to choose from. Other jobs state "Open until Filled" or something similar. Basically, when the human resources/hiring manager reaches a certain amount of applicants, they will close the job and review the job seekers documents. So, it would be wise to apply for a job listing that has a closing option of "Open until Filled" as soon as possible. In addition, it is even a good idea to apply early for a job with a clear closing date. There are instances when a job opening receives an abundance of applications forcing the hiring agency to close the job sooner.

Last week, I wasn't able to notify anyone about the updated jobs listing except those that receive it directly. There was a problem with where I post the North Coast Hot Jobs listing, Scribd. So, this week I will post again what I had said last week. It was about Post Office jobs.

1. There are four entry level type jobs;
A. City Carrier Assistant. Starts out about $16-$17/hr. Not a permanent job until a spot opens up. Someone leaves or retires. Then you become a City Carrier.
B. Assistant Rural Carrier. Starts out about $17-$18/hr. Not a post service career job. Contracted work. Deliver in the outlying areas.
C. Sales and Distribution Associate. Starts out at about $16-$17/hr. Work in the back of the post office. Early start time and very busy. Some work the counter and have regular hours.
D. Custodian. About $14/hr. Veteran’s preference job.
2. You can take the test for each job at the Bremerton airfield. No more traveling to I-5 corridor to take a test for a job you may not get. Tests are free. Work on memorization skills if taking test for mail delivery.
3. New employees can expect to work six days a week. Some even work 7 days a week with the Amazon Sundaydelivery. Cry all the way to the bank.
4. Talk with an employee about the work attitude at that post office before applying. Some bad ones.
5. The federal government is always interested in hiring minorities.
6. If you don’t get the job you applied for, they know about you now and keep applying.
7. This can be a good career for someone who is willing to work when needed.

If you know of any Alaskan Native or Native American that has physical or mental disabilities and is having a hard time looking for work, ask them to contact me at 360-460-7549. We have two counselors that could help you.

So it looks like there will be a Saar's type store in the Port Angeles. There used to be a Saar's Marketplace here, but that shut down shortly after the Walmart here turned into a Walmart Supercenter and started selling food. Anyways, this new Saar's store will occupy the old Albertson's building. So some of those people that moved to Safeway after Haggen's skipped town may move back. So there may not be any net gain of jobs in this area. More info here, http://www.peninsuladailynews.com/news/saars-owner-buys-haggen-building-plans-super-saver-foods-by-next-spring/

When we are out of work, we usually don't have as much money coming in as we did before. Some of us have even struggled to put food on the table for our families after paying the rent and/or a car payment. We are forced to tuck away our pride and go to DSHS to see if we qualify for food stamps. To avoid going to DSHS and waiting for your name to be called, DSHS has provided a means to calculate if you are eligible. Here is the link to the DSHS calculator, http://www.dshs.wa.gov/esa/tec/

Work Opportunity Tax Credit is a federal tax credit providing incentives to employers for hiring groups facing high rates of unemployment, such as veterans, youths and others. So, if you are applying for a job and they ask you questions about if you are currently on food stamps, receiving welfare, are unemployed or are a veteran, then answer accurately. An employer will receive a tax credit if they hire someone within this criteria. More info at this link, https://www.doleta.gov/business/incentives/opptax/eligible.cfm

Job Hunting Tip. A cover letter is an important link from you to the employer. It helps the employer understand why your capabilities are a good match for their requirements. Make your cover letter address all the job requirements in a job description. Be to the point. The hiring manager usually has other duties besides screening job applicants. Your cover letter has to grab their attention. It gives them a reason to pause and read your whole cover letter and actually scan your resume instead of just tossing it in file 13 (garbage can).

So, Nippon Mill is being shut down for 18 months to be refurbished by McKinley Paper Co. There has been a mill on that site for almost 100 years. Hopefully for those that have been working there, they will have a job there when this refurbished mill is restarted. Some that have been working there are going back to school. More info on this at this link, click here.

When you go back to school, you should give it considerable thought. You shouldn't just get training in a field and expect a job to be open where you want to work in your new career field. One thing to do is take an Interest Inventory Test. This type of test will evaluate your ability to do certain tasks and your desire to do them. This will help you go to school for what you want to do and what you are capable of doing. Another thing to do is check out O-Net at this link, click here. This website will help you determine if there is a demand for your new career in the area you want to live.

After you get done with an interview, don't just sit back and wait for the phone call. Try to make contact with someone on the interviewing board and thank them for the opportunity. This is called a follow up.

I am thinking of changing the format here. Just posting the links to where I get the jobs listing information and not actually creating a jobs listing. This would make it easier on me and give me more time to relax on the weekend.

Before you relocate to another area or go to college in hopes of getting an education and then moving to a specific region, you should first consult the Occupational Information Network (O*Net). This free online web service provides you with a idea of what the status of a particular occupation is within a certain area. You can determine whether your specialty is in demand, not in demand or somewhere in between. Their website is located here, http://www.onetonline.org/

You can type in a keyword in the Occupation Search block, such as "computer" or look under the "Find Occupations" heading. When you click on one of the many results, you can find out whether the outlook is bright or not in a certain area.

So, the former Nippon (Daishowa) mill has been sold to McKinley Paper Company which is owned by a Mexican firm. The mill has been closed for business since January 21st. Up to 105 people have been out of work as a result.

The new name for the mill will be McKinley Paper Co., Washington Mill. It will produce recycled containerboard. That was the good news that the mill will be up and running again. The bad news is that it could take six months to one year for the plant to be retooled to produce the new product. Then, there is no word if any of the former employees there will be hired back.

Sorry there was no North Coast Hot Jobs listing last week. My life got too busy.

Some Craigslist job hunting scams

There are ways to help you determine whether a job posting is legitimate or fake. Here is a list of red flags to look out for.
1) Asking for money, credit or debit info.
2) They want to send you money to put into your bank.
3) They want your social security number.
4) They want you to send a photo copy of your I.D. to verify.
5) They want a background check BEFORE you are considered for a position or they are asking for personal information.
6) Job contact email address does not match the company name (i.e. john@gmail.com instead of john@widgetsrus.com.
7) Mystery shoppers, work at home or online jobs.
8) Multiple misspellings in a job notice.
9) Upfront fees.
10) Earn money in a hurry.
11) Work at home.
12) No company name.
13) Have to use job board email. It could be anyone.
14) Check cashing and wire transfers.
15) Continuously open job that does not reply. They might be data harvesters gathering personal info from resumes sent to them.

This week I will discuss something that I have talked about previously. Promoting internally or hiring externally. Is it better for an organization to find someone from within the organization to receive a new job opening or do they hire someone from the outside? Let's look at the benefits of each.

Promoting internally:
1) A known commodity. The organization knows what you can do and how you fit in.
2) Less likely to leave.
3) Cheaper to hire. Paperwork already completed.
4) They are more acclimated with the organizational culture, procedures and connections.
5) Good for morale.

Hiring externally:
1) Bring new ideas to an organization versus same old way of thinking.
2) More likely to find best person for job.
3) Promoting within can cause conflict issues if more than one current employee applies for the same job.

There may be five reasons posted here to promote internally versus three reasons to hire externally, but how much value is given on each category depends on the Human Resources people and the Hiring Manager.

This is a controversial subject. Does an employer hire someone who has invested in advanced education or the person that has a wealth of experience? Employer preferences do have an impact on this decision. To find out more info on this touchy subject, it is best to google the phrase "Education versus Experience." As an employer, this could give you an idea what other hiring managers do in this situation. For any potential employees, this info could help provide answers so you can know what to expect during your job search. Other considerations are 1) does the job require education? 2) the type of job 3) the value of the experience or education and 4) is the experience or education relevant to the job?
